Our Special Guests are:

REDHOT & BLUE
Yale University A Capella Jazz Singers
http://www.redhotandblue.org

We last hosted the group in 2011. Great to have them back!

Redhot & Blue, usually shortened to Redhot, is Yale University’s oldest coeducational a cappella group.

Founded in 1977, the group has released many albums and toured around the United States and the world. Repertoire for the group is based in the jazz genre, though many of their arrangements stray from this. Redhot is a member of the Singing Group Council of Yale.

The group’s name is derived from the musical Red, Hot and Blue (1936), written by Yale alumnus Cole Porter, class of 1913. The group name combines Redhot into one word and uses an ampersand, unlike the show. Cole Porter’s work is featured often in Redhot’s repertoire, from Antoinette Birby, written when he was in college, to more popular songs like “It’s De-Lovely”, “I Get a Kick Out of You”, “Night And Day”, and “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye”.

See: background of Redhot and Blue and some videos They’re terrific!

ABOUT MICHELE-LOUISE RIDLEY-COOK AND LA BONNE VIVANTE:

La Bonne Vivante online image gallery features images predominately from the 1800s to the 1940s. There are photos of African American families, church groups, children and couples. There is professional portraiture; there are many vernacular and “found” photographs.

There are cabinet card photos, RPPCs, cartes de visite, and tintypes. African Americans, from myriad locales, rural and urban, are always the focal point. For events, photos, video clips, and documents can be accompanied by the music of your choice.

La BonneVivante can artistically render, customized, personalized,  photo-musical retrospectives, perfect for adding meaning and fax to weddings, graduations, birthday and anniversary celebrations, reunions, memorials—every type of  personal, corporate or other organizational milestones and events. Great for collectors.

Michele-Louise Ridley-Cook, originally from Scotch Plains, N.J. and now Fairfax County Virginia, was formerly a management consultant with Booze Allen Hamilton and Pricewater House Coopers before she found her true calling as a collector and dealer of African American memorabilia and ephemera. Read the great testimonials on her website: http://labonnevivante.com/

The Essence Of The Ultimate Paris Expat Experience

Stretching Your Boundaries

Our Special Guests are

VIDA CORNELIOUS
Senior Advertising Exxucutive
Floral Arrangeent Artist

TOMMIE-LEE MCKENZIE
Bassist

Jazz. Pop

ABOUT VIDA CORNELIOUS:

Vida had always wanted to come to Paris to study  Floral Flower arrangements. Paris represents the top of the top in the field.

Before beginning a career in advertising, Vida had owned a flower shop and it had always been her dream to study with one of the top persons in that field. But she was overcome by doubts and fears. She created obstacles for herself which she eventually overcame. She’ll tell us how.

She is taking a course in Paris with Catherine Muller, who has a celebrated floral arrangement school and uses a romantic, organic, Province approach in which the flower arrangement follows the natural movement of the flowers. Studying with Catherine Muller represents a triumph and the fulfillment of a dream for Vida. Almost  blocked by obstacles that she created for herself. She will share thoughts about conditioned fear and overcoming it. And how this led her,  although not an Paris resident, to the ultimate Expat experience.

SAYS VIDA:

If there is anything I am learning on this Paris adventure, it’s the power of the 3Fs. Well, if you are asking what those are, it’s this simple statement: “Freedom From Fear.”

As I’ve gotten older, I’m seeing more clearly that FEAR is the biggest enemy of mankind. It’s not time, or money, or access, it’s the unwillingness to let go of our obsession with controlling the unknown — feeding the beast of a what-could-go-wrong mentality vs. embracing the possibility of all that could actually go right

HAVING THE COURAGE TO DECIDE TO COME TO PARIS:

“But I then I woke up one day with a plan and I just pulled the trigger. No worries. What’s for you is for you right? And this was definitely “for me” because all aligned and I’m here.

…having a great time, learning more about something I love, meeting new people from around the world, and “fitting in” just fine. I really can’t imagine NOT being here. Passing this class up would have been yet another missed opportunity, and I didn’t want that kind of regret…

THERE’S NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF.”

VIDA’S CONCUSION:

“Maybe I just discovered the real reason Paris is called the “city of lights” is because what actually shines here, is you.”

Vida is another true lover of Paris!

Address: At a trendy and fun new venue – a French bistro in the Marais –  just behind BHV. at the metro Hotel de Ville (ligne 1).

Our Special Guests are

AUDREY EDWARDS
Writer, Author, Editor (Former Editor And Executive Editor Of Essence Magazine, Et. Al.), New Paris Expat

TOMMIE-LEE MCKENZIE
Bassist

SAYS AUDREY EDWARDS:
“I’d like to discuss why for me leaving America was imperative after Trump became President.
Some people thought I was” punking out” by leaving. Some thought I was showing courage. The point is, making the decision to leave one’s native land is never easy and is always transformative.

But I knew that the America I was born into would no longer feel safe under Trump because his political leadership would be hostile at worst (or indifferent at best) to my aspirations as a black and a woman: as a mother of a black son and a grandmother to four black girls, as a journalist who has always reported from the blurred lines of race and gender.”

ABOUT AUDREY EDWARDS:
Audrey Edwards, a contributing writer for Essence magazine and former contributing editor at More magazine, was a magazine editor for more than two decades, having held the positions of Editor and Executive Editor at Essence; Vice President and Executive Editor at Black Enterprise magazine; and a Senior Editor at More and Family Circle magazines.

Her media career also includes extensive freelance magazine writing, with her work having been published in O, The Oprah Magazine; the New York Times Sunday Magazine; Vibe; the Columbia Journalism Review, among others; and the online publications The Huffington Post, The Root.com and Salon.com.

Her most recent work is the book collaboration she did with Edward Lewis, co-founder and publisher of Essence magazine, titled The Man From Essence: Creating a Magazine for Black Women, published by Atria Books (Simon & Schuster) in 2014. In addition, she is the co-author of Children of the Dream: The Psychology of Black Success , published by Doubleday.

In addition to authoring books and magazine features, Audrey has taught magazine writing and magazine editing at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and New York University’s Publishing Institute.

For the past three decades Audrey Edwards has divided her freelance journalism career with being a real estate broker. She ran her own company, Plaza Properties, in Brooklyn, New York, for 22 years before joining the real estate firm Brown Harris Stevens in 2008 as an Associate Broker.

She is a member of the Real Estate Board of New York.

Audrey is a true lover of Paris!
